Element tie encodes a tie starting from the current notehead. According to the rules of music theory, the next chord is expected to contain another notehead with the same pitch. If the following chord in the same part and voice does not present that pitch, the symbol can be used to encode indications such as "let ring" or "laissez vibrer".
